When is culture yours?

…cultural #appropriation or cultural #appreciation? Sharing or stealing?

When is culture yours? This is the opening question to an exhibit currently in the #tropenmuseum. Like many of us, I have mixed (and often #contradictory) feelings around this issue. I do use the word tribe for example - but find myself judging when Buddha statues and Nepali prayer flags are used as balcony decoration.

From Beyoncé to bindis, yoga to hummus - the debates rage. Where do you draw the line between appreciation and appropriation ? Is it different when there is a power imbalance or you are of a certain skin colour? Even though we all probably have differing opinions - the willingness to #listen, #discuss and #disagree is what brings the #intercultural world to life for me! 🌍
