Sri Lankan Dream
…having just spent a month in my #homehome has me contemplating #belonging, or lack thereof, and #privilege.
Sri Lanka is a tropical #paradise, or rather it is for me. And for those of us who have the pleasure of visiting. It breaks my heart to know that, for many, the Sri Lankan dream is to leave, go abroad, get off the island. Feeling like I don’t quite belong isn’t a new sensation for me - but I’m starting to realise what a privilege it is. I don’t have a home - I have many countries where I feel I partly belong. I don’t have a nationality - I have multiple - and the #passportprivileges that come along with it. The freedom that having many identities gives me is one that, in my 30's, I am exploring, appreciating and making peace with.
Sri Lanka is a country, and a people, that is more resilient than any should have to be. From civil war to natural disasters, economic crises and terrorism, this is an island that has had to rebuild itself too many times. But it gives me great hope that there are amazing humans who are working tirelessly to explore, examine and embody the healing of a nation.
