Decolonisation in Art

… it makes me so proud when my friends do amazing things! Minal Wickrematunge is the current artist in residence at Justice & Peace Netherlands. Not only does she show me the power of art for social change - but she’s been delving into her #colonial heritage too.

Having been in the #Netherlands for 8 (!) years now, I feel more strongly than ever that we need more awareness - starting with the fact that Sri Lanka was even a colony. I was interviewed by Minal as part of a collection of stories of the Dutch #Burghers of Sri Lanka - and I look forward to sharing that after the exhibition opens - which will explore the post-colonial Identity of Sri Lanka.

This exhibition explores the many nuances that make Sri Lanka what it is today - a vibrant, multicultural island in the Indian Ocean. Our roots, undoubtedly tied deeply with foreign settlers who came and made Sri Lanka their own home. I will leave a link to Minal’s work - she’s one to follow! 🎨 🌟
